SOURDOUGH STARTER DAY 1

Started at 10 PM

Most of the baking I do is sweets so I want to get better at more “practical” baking like bread since you eat that more day to day than sweets.

Sourdough has always kinda been intimidating because it takes a long time and there seems so be so many special things you have to do. But HERE WE GO.

I started my sourdough starter tonight. I watched a lot of videos on YouTube and TikTok and read different recipes. Basically it’s equal parts flour and water. But I did read it’s best to start specifically with wheat flour (or a mix) and filtered water so that’s what I did.

I just grabbed a clean pickle jar and I weighed out 60g of whole wheat flour and 60g of filtered water. I got it from a water bottle in the garage so I ended up microwaving it a little to get it warmer. Plus everything I read said to store it in a warm place for 24 hours. Since we’re in a basement in in Utah in January, that’s not super likely lol so I figured the water being a little warmer wouldn’t hurt. I probably ended up using like 65g water because the consistency after stirring it with a fork looked too dry. Most people said peanut butter consistency for day 1.

I set the lid on top and we’ll see how it is tomorrow night. You don’t want to turn the lid at all though or close it because the gasses need to be able to escape a little.

Apparently it’s tradition to name your sourdough starter because the bacteria is alive and you have to feed it so it’s like a baby. I’m going to name him Goya. This is a very roundabout name but I love art history and a painting that has stuck with my since I saw it in art school is Goya’s “Saturn Devouring His Son”. And since this sourdough starter is my son and I will soon be devouring it, I feel like Goya is a fitting name. (JUMP SCARE BELOW)
